Sabile and Abava Rural Territory
Sabile is a small town located in the beautiful ancient valley of Abava river in the southern part of Talsi region. The town from all sides is surrounded by Abava Rural Territory.

Since July, 2009, the town of Sabile and Abava Rural Territory are included in Talsi Region Municipality.

Sabile`s name for the first time was mentioned in 1253. A Couronian Castle and Old town were there. Approximately in XIII – XIV century a traders and craftsmen village was formed around German feudal lord`s castle.
During Duke Jacob`s governance a flax weaver`s workshop, pitch-kiln and lime-kiln, and mill were establish in Sabile. In the 19thcentury Sabile was famous for its craftsmen – curriers.
In 1917 Sabile acquired town rights.
Sabile`s symbol is a Winehill, – approximately 1-hectare open-air vineyard, that has been included in the Guinness World Record Book as the most northern open-air vineyard in the world. There is a bunch of grapes in town`s blazon as well.
The town of Sabile celebrates Wine Festival that every year is held on the fourth Saturday and Sunday of July since 1999.
On the other side of Abava, in Pedvāle manor, sculptor Ojārs Feldbergs has created Open-air Art Museum at Pedvale where culture events take place and modern art installations are exhibited in the open-air. 
Sabile and a part of Abava Rural Territory are included in a specially preserved cultural and historical territory “Abavas ieleja” (Abava Valley). Sabile and its surroundings are rich with local significance archeology memorials (burial sites and cemeteries) and natural attractions.
Historical centre of Sabile is a town building monument of a state significance, which gives perception about Courland small towns’ development from 15th to 20th century. In Sabile several house decorative elements, old tile roofs, and street pavement have still remained.
Sabile`s Lutheran Church celebrated its 440th anniversary in 2007. The church has unique bell that is the oldest one in the Latvia and one of the oldest in Europe, made in 1450. Also the pulpit of the church is the oldest one in Latvia.
There are culture centre, secondary school, preschool education institution (kindergarten), music and arts school in town Sabile, and three libraries in Sabile and Abava Rural Territory.
Sabile`s Craftsmen centre was established in 2002.
There are a social care center for handicapped people “Veģi” in Abava Rural Territory and old people`s home “Kalme” in the town of Sabile.
Good cooperation and friendship is between town of Sabile and town of Heino/Raalte (The Netherlands). Most investment in this cooperation is given by members of Foundation “Heino – Sabile” (from town of Heino). This friendship since 1992 has resulted in lots of valuable, interesting and nice events and happenings – there have been different exchange of experience and cultural visits and events helping to get acquainted with culture, view of life and traditions of both nations.
Local entrepreneurs mostly work in the sector of agriculture, trade, and tourism.
